What "date difference" really means
Date arithmetic is deceptively complex because months don't share a common length and a calendar year is mostly 365 days, occasionally 366. This calculator separates two related questions:
- Total days — a flat count, perfect for "how long since…" questions.
- Calendar gap (years/months/days) — useful for anniversaries and tenure, e.g. "3 years 2 months 7 days".
Inclusive vs. exclusive endpoints is the most common source of contractual confusion. A 30-day notice from the 1st of the month ends on the 31st exclusive, but a "30-day stay" usually counts both arrival and departure days.
Common uses
- Anniversaries: how long you've been married, employed, or learning a skill.
- Contract durations: notice periods, lease terms, payment windows.
- Project planning: working out elapsed time between sprints or releases.
- Travel: counting nights in a stay or days between flights.
